If you are the spouse or dependent child of the deceased, you may be eligible for benefits under Social Security, which may include monthly payments and a lump sum death payment. You must apply for these benefits upon the death of the person who contributed to Social Security; benefits are not automatic. New Eyes for the Needy strives to improve the vision of the less fortunate by purchasing new eyeglasses in the United States and recycling donated glasses for distribution in developing nations worldwide. Hear Now is a national non-profit program committed to assisting deaf and hard-of-hearing persons with limited financial resources. The group collects hearing aids for recycling purposes. Any make or model, regardless of age, can be donated to the hearing and recycling program. Contact them on the web or at 6700 Washington Avenue South Eden Prairie, MN 55344.

Pacemakers. Federal regulations prohibit person-to-person donations of pacemakers, but allows recycled pacemakers to be implanted in animals. Call your local veterinary school, veterinarian, email the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine with headquarters in Lakewood, CO, acvim@acvim.org or call them at 800-245-9081. Other Resources
Many community hospitals operate non-profit thrift shops run by volunteers. Call your local hospital for information.
Some churches hold rummage sales to raise funds for operating costs and charities. Contact your church for additional information.
Crutches, canes, and walkers can be donated to a senior outreach program in your community or your local Benevolent Protective Order of Elks.
